JCU SURGICAL SOCIETY 2024 EXECS.

JCU Surgical Society 2023 Execs.

NING

President

As the previous RACS competitor, secretary and sponsorship officer of JCUSurg, I’m keen to continue working with the JCUSurg team in 2023 as the president. Previous experience with the team (and JCUSA) has given me an insight to the planning of current events (CS Night, Anatomy Tips and Tricks Night, Guest Speaker Night) and how to further maximise the potential of JCUSurg.

EUNAH

Vice President

For this upcoming year, I wanted to challenge myself and contribute more to the surgical society as the vice president.

I have vast experience in student clubs. I have been the JCU rep of QLD Pre-Vocational Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society collaborating with JCUMSA and SANTE, secretary of INPsych, and year 3 rep of INSAKA, and have been the sponsorship officer of GPSN. I have various connections and insight to clubs and knowledge of how to successfully promote clubs and execute events and collaborate with club members, in which I have successfully proven as the member of the JCUsurg.

Julia

Secretary

I hope to enhance our student engagement for our current events. With my experience with anatomy tutoring, surgical assisting and participation in the RACS Comp 2021, I am able to bring valuable skills and insights to the team. I would also like to see more research incorporated into our events, as it is an integral part of becoming a budding surgeon.

REECE

Treasurer

Over the last 2 years I have seen the club grow and played a key role in organising finances for events and increasing our member base and reach not only in TSV but also in Cairns and Mackay. I have also been able to see and guide new executive members into the club and work with them to build the club. In 2023, I hope to be able to lead JCUSurg to new heights and build on the work of previous presidents in order to continue to deliver high quality surgical events to all JCU cohorts and promote surgery amongst the wider JCU community.

PHOEBE

Sponsorship Officer

Having developed strong communication skills and initiative through roles as year representative and treasurer for other clubs previously, I will be able to effectively liaise with the Townsville cohort as well as the rest of the team. I want to take greater initiative in understanding their questions and areas of interest within surgery, and perhaps launching events to address these areas. Furthermore, having been treasurer of SANTE, I have a solid understanding of finances and would be able to communicate with potential sponsors, treasurer and the rest of team to secure good sponsorships and ongoing relationships.

LACHLAN

Promotion and Publication Officer

Due to previously serving as publications/promos officer I am well versed in the time requirements being an executive member demands.

I am confident I can continue to promote the club and surgery across year levels – building rapport with students and seeking out the involvement of surgeons for guest speaker nights. I intend to serve a greater role with only three subjects in third year and look forward to continuing to serve you all for another year as IT officer.

NITHYA

Equity Officer

My two years of experience at JCU clubs include being Year 1-2 Events and International Student Representative for JCUMSA along with Year 2 Representative and Secretary for JCU ASHA. I am aware of the due processes that need to be adhered to at clubs and when organizing events. Furthermore, the last 5 years, from volunteering to organizing medical events, have allowed me to develop contacts at TUH, PAH, and internationally in hospitals in the US, Canada and India.

LUKA

Townsville Representative

I’m well-versed in how the club runs and what it takes to plan and run events. Moreover, I’ve gained confidence and experience in logistics and reaching out to people (such as sponsors) through other roles across the year, and I’d like to bring these skills to Surg. I’m also well connected with the grades above and below me and know I can use these relationships to increase the size of our audience.

TAYLOR

Townsville Representative

I want to see more minority groups, including women, represented in the surgical field— and so would prioritize the continuing inclusivity of JCUSurg events when coming up with ideas. This includes being receptive to feedback and approachable by all cohorts, which I feel is important in order to challenge stereotypes around surgical culture. I have experience as both a 2021 biomed year level rep and student mentor, and so hope to apply my skills to this role.

CHATHMAL

Townsville Representative

For 2023, I plan to have informational talks with various specialities to enable students to getting a better understanding of what it is like to go into specific field. I also have plans for creating events that are interactive with students such as teaching laparoscopy skills by a surgeon or even case studies with surgeons.

MATT

Mackay Representative

Over the last year I have been beginning to create the contacts and some regular events during the year for those who are interested in surgery.

I have a reasonable grasp of what is required to conduct the events and with myself being in 6th year without any exams to stress about I should be much more able to work towards conducting an event in the area.

Callum

Mackay Representative

Rahat

Pre-clinical Representative

I would love to be a part of helping bring greater levels of awareness about surgery to the preclinical year cohorts. I’m very passionate about surgery, including both the practical and research aspects of it; I’ve worked with vascular surgeons in the past and have also been involved in research involving surgical interventions for cancers/tumours. I want to help others be able to get involved with experiences such as these as well.

LILY

Pre-clinical Representative

This role provides me with the opportunity to be part of ensuring that all medical students are provided with opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals at the university and share their passions for surgery, research and innovation within surgical specialities. I would like to be part of promoting the development of surgical expertise, clinical decision-making, research and health-advocacy skills within the medical cohort.

DAN

Cairns Representative

I believe I can represent both the interests of the club to our members as well as in the CNS community which is smaller and more removed from the major TSV events. I have been establishing connections with surgeons who would be interested in teaching and presenting.

In 2023 I have planned a surgical skills night that can coincide with TSV nights so both sites can be reached. I have also planned for surgical upkeeping skills for those about to enter the surgical rotation for practice. Lastly I have planned a RACS prep session for the 4th years coming to CNS so that they might be interested in competing in the major event in TSV.
